    Hotel Baker construction ca. November 1928. A stable had previously occupied the site on northwest corner of Main and Auburn streets, since the town's earliest days. By the 1920's in-town stabling of horses was no longer in demand. The hotel had its opening in August 1929, only to have the stock market tumble in October.     Baker City's first post office. Located in postmaster William F. McCrary's Variety Store in the middle of the 1700 block of Main St. east side. All the buildings in this block burned down in 1887. McCrary had been postmaster in Auburn but moved the post office to Baker City in 1865, according to Isaac Hiatt, "Thirty-one Years in Baker County," p. 50.
