Title |
Robinette's one-room school house interior, 1952. |
Description |
Robinette's one-room school house interior, 1952. Desks laid out in rows in 3 sizes: oldest students were assigned the large desks (Charlene Whitely and Joan Robinette on left); youngest students got the smallest desks in front of teacher Bernice Robinette's desk (Loretta Pollard and Petey Basche); middle age students assigned to mid-sized desks on right (from rear Earl Robinette, Karen Whitely, Linda Buchanan, and Betty Basche. Cast iron old desks are on wood runners to protect the floor and make lining up in rows easier. Each desk had an inkwell on the left front. Heat register in floor brought heat from the coal-burning furnace in the basement. Blackboards on east and south walls. Assignments written on right side of blackboard behind the teacher. Door to cloakroom on left and to the right double doors lead to the covered front porch. Lights aren't on, because of natural light from high windows on north and west sides of the room. If students' dogs were well-behaved, they, too, could attend school! |
